Business Case for Diversity
Our focus on diversity goes beyond social and moral responsibility. At Henry Ford Health System, diversity is not just the “right thing to do”; it is a key component of our strategic plan to become an industry leader. Achieving our goal of growth and service excellence will require a diverse workforce that is productive, creative and reflective of the communities we serve. Focusing on diversity and creating an inclusive environment is not just a “nice thing to do”, it makes good business sense.
Here are a few factors that support the business case for diversity:
- Our market is diversifying faster than our workforce.
- Our customers are diverse
- Minorities are the majority in six out of eight largest metropolitan areas of the US.
- The combined African-American, Hispanic-American and Asian-American buying power is more than $750 billion dollars.
- Women are the primary investors in more than half of US Households. (Source: from SHRM Diversity Initiative website)
- Embracing Diversity and achieving diversity results attracts higher producing employees to a company
Our growth and success depends on the quality of our employees. Company diversity initiatives are a selling point for job seekers. Today’s talented employees are interested in and attracted to companies with strong diversity programs and values.
- Increased Creativity
Differences bring creativity and creativity is what helps an organization capitalize on innovative thinking and ideas. Bringing individuals from different backgrounds together can help yield perspectives, solutions, services and products that are imperative to building your business strength.
- Flexibility
Diversity requires an organization to be flexible with its policies, benefits, schedules, services etc. It is this adaptive ability that ensures the survival of businesses. Diversity strengthens the ability to change with the times and workforce.
- Customer Service and Market Share
- Customers increase when they can see people serving them that understand their unique needs.
- A diverse workforce attracts a more diverse range of customers and increases the likelihood that the customer will get someone that speaks their language and/or understands their culture.
- Diverse teams develop products that better serve the customer and understand their varying needs.
- Increased Productivity
- A diverse management team better understands how to motivate the varying needs of a team.
- Diverse teams with different ideas and approaches are more productive and deliver better quality work.
- Diversity of experiences brings a broader range of ideas and solutions to problems.
- Retention
- Having a diverse workforce may result in the strengthening of a corporate culture and values.
- An inclusive environment that supports innovation and a diversity of ideas is attractive and increases loyalty.

Employee Network and Activities Groups
HFH Pride
HFHS launched our first HFH Pride employee affinity group. HFH Pride is a support and resource group for Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender (GLBT) employees. We are excited to have such a group and look forward to meeting more of the needs of the GLBT population.
